Last week, I attended the national meeting of the HRM Expert Group. Among the wide range of topics discussed, I found ESG particularly inspiring. In a world that is becoming increasingly fast-paced and where resource consumption is continuously rising, it is essential to address the issue of sustainability.

Why is ESG, and thus sustainability, an essential task for all of us?

The term ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) has become a guiding principle that reinforces the call for environmentally sustainable, socially just, and ethically responsible corporate governance.

Raising awareness of sustainability

Building a strong awareness of sustainability is crucial. It starts with the realization that every individual and every company can and must contribute. Information and education about ecological interrelationships, social justice, and responsible corporate governance form the basis for a shift toward greater sustainability. It mobilizes individuals and organizations to critically question their own behavior and initiate positive change.
Digitalization can play a key role here by making information easily accessible and raising awareness of sustainability issues.

Sustainability in IT

Digital technologies offer unforeseen opportunities to make processes more efficient and environmentally friendly and to make knowledge available. Whether it's cloud computing, which saves resources, or intelligent systems that optimize energy consumption, IT can make a significant contribution to a sustainable future. However, it is also important to raise awareness of the ecological footprints associated with IT infrastructures and the operation of data centers.

In today's world, it is essential that we all—individuals, companies, and society as a whole—become aware of the urgency and responsibility of promoting sustainable practices. ESG and awareness-raising are crucial building blocks on this path.

As management consultants, we in particular should not forget this – is an on-site appointment absolutely necessary, or can we use modern tools (e.g., Teams) to hold meetings?
